Delaware Lawmakers Offer Some Relief in Shutdown

DOVER, Del. (AP) - The Delaware Senate has rejected a proposal for the state to guarantee loans to federal workers affected by the government shutdown but has approved a bill protecting those same workers from landlords and other creditors.

The loan guarantee proposal failed Wednesday despite Democrats bringing it up for two separate votes. It would have authorized using $80,000 of taxpayer money to guarantee bank loans to federal workers furloughed or not being paid because of the shutdown.

The second bill, which also passed the House, permits federal workers to ask a court or administrative agency to temporarily suspend required payments for rent, mortgage, taxes and other obligations.

It also caps interest rates for federal workers and prohibits landlords from evicting federal workers and insurance companies from terminating policies without a court order.
