Maryland State Senate President Mike Miller announced today that he has prostate cancer.
The longtime Democrat said he would be undergoing chemotherapy at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
The word comes after the opening day of the legislative session.
In his statement the 76 year old Miller said that he was diagnosed in July.
But he said that by December the disease was no longer manageable through pharmaceuticals alone.
The Baltimore Sun reports that two people who spoke with Miller before the announcement described the cancer as “advance” and “aggressive”.
He is the longest state Senate President in the country elected to the House of Delegates in 1970 and ascending to the Senate 4 years later.
He was first elected Senate president in 1977.
