Rehoboth Beach Nativity Scene Battle Draws in Public & Businesses

St. Edmond Catholic Church

The order by the city of Rehoboth for St. Edmond Catholic Church to take down a nativity scene has resulted in a public battle.

The resort order to take it down on December 6th which was located near the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand.

The church claims that it was given informal permission to put up the nativity scene with the condition that other religious symbols were included.

Mayor Paul Kuhns denies giving such permission.

The dispute has resulted in verbal sparring by supporters and opponents.

Supporters of the display charge taking down the scene “political correctness” while opponents say it’s about the separation of church and state.

Local businesses have gotten into fray with the Crabby Dick’s Restaurant changing its highway sign reading, “Wake Up Rehoboth Beach, Jesus is the reason for the season.”

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the city is not likely to change its mind and plans to meet with local religious organizations to look at an all-inclusive display for the future.
