Dover Police Give Up Some Animal Control Duties

creative commons

The Dover Police will be handing over complaints about stray animals to the Delaware Office of Animal Welfare.

WBOC reports that this will go into effect on December 1st.

This means that police will no longer deal with stray dog or dog in custody complaints.

But the police department said it will still handle such issues ranging from animal cruelty and animal nuisance to barking dogs and wildlife complaints.

Cpl. Mark Hoffman told the television station that the police department only handled around 16 to 18 stray dogs last year.

Among the factors he said was the cost which amounted to $60-thousand a year to the Brandywine Valley SPCA.
