Another inmate facing murder charges in the uprising at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center took the stand this week.

Dwayne Staats told the jury that he was the one who recruited the inmates who were able to take over Building C and held the guards hostage.

The Wilmington News Journal reports he testified that his intent was to expose the conditions of the prison.

During his testimony he took responsibility for planning the uprising and to personally take the prison counselor Patrica May hostage.

May was held with three other correctional officers.

Officer Steven Floyd was found dead when the uprising ended.

Staats is serving a life sentence for murder.

The News Journal reports that his appearance follows  a half a dozen inmates who gave contradictory testimony in the case.
