Corrections Officer Could Have Been Saved in Delaware Prison Riot

Delaware’s chief medical examiner testified that correctional officer Lt. Steven Floyd bled to death during the prison uprising at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that Dr. Gary Collins who conducted an autopsy on Floyd said that the superficial nature of his wound suggested that he could have been saved.

The testimony came in the trial of three inmates charged with murder resulting from the uprising.

And the jury was shown autopsy pictures of Floyd’s beaten body.

Collins said it was uncertain as to the exact time of death.

Meanwhile, the state settled a lawsuit brought by Floyd’s family and other non-inmate hostages for $7.5 million last year.

The News Journal reports that the suit claimed that Floyd could have been saved.
