Hostage Warned by Staffer About Conditions at Delaware Prison Before Riot

Just an hour before the inmate uprising at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center 69-year-old counselor Patricia May said that she told a fellow staff member she feared she would die at the prison.

May was testifying in the trial of four inmate charged in the prison riot including the death of Correctional Officer Steven Floyd.

The Wilmington News Journalreports she said she was warned by another staff member about the conditions in C Building before taking the assignment.

May was taken hostage and tied up with a hood over her head.

She was eventually rescued around 18 hours later.

May was one of four personnel taken hostage.

The other three were beaten and included the death of Floyd.

An independent review criticized the facility for fa lack of programs for inmates as well as understaffing.
