Vivid Testimony of Inmate Uprising at Vaughn Correctional Center

Joe Simon

It was vivid testimony during this week’s trial in the inmate uprising at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center in February of last year.

Staff was alerted to a major disturbance as they heard the words Code Three and that inmates have seized the building in Charlie or C block.

The Wilmington News Journal reports the announcement included the fact that a sergeant was locked in a closet.

Correctional officer Winslow Smith recalled the initial attack and witnessing Lt. Steven Floyd being pushed into mop closet.

He testified that he found himself with correctional officer Joshua Wilkinson bloodied, handcuffed and locked in a closet near where Floyd was being held.

Wilkinson testified that he could hear “a loud object striking” Floyd some10 or 15 times over a prolonged period of time.

Floyd died as a result of the prison uprising.
