Delaware Democratic Lawmaker Takes High Paying State Job

DOVER, Del. (AP) - A longtime Democratic House lawmaker who opted not to seek re-election this year has taken a $95,000-a-year job as deputy director of Delaware's lottery office.

Department of Finance officials announced Helene Keeley's hiring Tuesday, one day after a New Castle County Republican official filed a Freedom of Information request concerning her potential hiring.

Finance Secretary Rick Geisenberger said Tuesday that the position was created a year ago through reclassification of a vacant assistant director post.  He says the job was not created for Keeley, and that officials interviewed several potential candidates.

Lottery director Vernon Kirk ultimately suggested that Keeley might be a good fit, and she accepted the post on June 14.

Keeley currently works for the state Department of Labor. She starts her new job Nov. 12.
