Credibility Questions Arise in Prison Riot Trial

Delaware correctional officers who were held hostage during the inmate up rising at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center took the stand in Wilmington Superior Court yesterday.

Their testimony came in the second day of the trial four inmates who face charges in the death of correctional officer Steven Floyd.

The officers were cross examined by the defense including two inmates who are representing themselves.

The inmates questioned the credibility of the investigation and wanted to know why of the many items gathered at the scene fewer than two dozen were sent out for DNA testing.

The Wilmington News Journalreports that Defendant Jareau Ayers wanted to know why five shanks or homemade knives and bloody gloves were left off the list.

State Police Detective Cpl. Roger Cresto replied that the investigation only focused on who killed Floyd.

In addition, there was testimony about the conditions of the cell block which was taken over by the inmates in early February of last year.

Trials for the other inmates charged in the case are expected to run through early next year.
