Delaware Officials Unable to Find Source in Rabies Death

governor blogs.gov

Delaware health officials are still trying to figure out how a woman who died last week got infected with rabies.

Dr. Karyl Rattay with the state Division of Public Health said on a conference call that the animal source of the still unidentified woman is not clear.

Rattay told reporters that she was notified about a potential rabies case by the CDC two weeks ago.

WBOC reports that the victim was initially taken to a Delaware hospital but was then transferred to a Pennsylvania facility as her condition worsened.

Last week it was confirmed that she had contracted the deadly disease.

The last case of death from rabies in Delaware occurred in 1941 when a boy died after a dog bite.

State health and agriculture officials are asking residents to be more vigilant in preventing exposure to the disease.
