ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Jarrod W. Ramos is charged with 5 counts of 1st-degree murder in Capitol Gazette killings.

Police say a man firing a shotgun killed four journalists and a staffer at Maryland's capital newspaper before officers quickly arrived and took him into custody.

Police say they questioned Ramos, a white man in his late 30s, following Thursday's attack on The Capital Gazette in Annapolis.

Acting Police Chief William Krampf of Anne Arundel County says it was a targeted attack in which the gunman "looked for his

victims."

Journalists described how they scrambled under desks and sought to hide during a few minutes of terror. They recounted hearing the gunman's footsteps as he moved about the newsroom, firing his weapon.

Retired publisher and top editor Tom Marquardt told The Capital Gazette that he had long been concerned about Ramos' history of escalating social media attacks against the newspaper and its journalists.

He called police about Ramos in 2013 and considered filing a restraining order against him.

Names of Victims

Officials have released the names of the five people killed at the newspaper.

They are: Wendi Winters, John McNamara, Gerald Fischman, Rebecca Smith, and Rob Hiaasen.

Winters was the special publications editor. McNamara was a writer. Fischman was editorial page editor. Smith was a sales assistant. Hiassen was an assistant editor and columnist.

On his Facebook author Carl Hiaasen says he is "devastated and heartsick" at the loss of his brother in Thursday's shooting. He recalls his brother as "one of the most gentle and funny people I've ever known" who had a "gifted career as a journalist."

The Miami Herald reported that Hiaasen was a warm and witty voice in the media world but kept up lifelong connections to Florida, where he grew up and worked previously for the Palm Beach Post.

A GoFundMe account set up for the newspaper raised more than $20,000 within just three hours.

The account was set up by a fellow journalist, Bloomberg Government reporter Madi Alexander. By 8 p.m., the total amount in donations had reached more than half the $30,000 goal.

The GoFundMe page posting urged people to give what they can to help the newspaper's journalists pay for medical bills, funeral costs, newsroom repairs and other expenses.
