ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Maryland voters are choosing candidates Tuesday for all 188 state legislative seats, governor and members of Congress.

The Democratic primary for governor is one of the major races. Polls show Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker and former NAACP President Ben Jealous in a tight race in a crowded primary. Republican Gov. Larry Hogan is unchallenged for his party's nomination.

Voters are picking nominees to run for the state's eight U.S. House seats, and U.S. Sen. Ben Cardin is running for re-election against a field of candidates, including Chelsea Manning, the transgender rights activist convicted of leaking U.S. government secrets to WikiLeaks.

Locally there are several hot races.

One is in state Senate District 38 where Democratic incumbent Jim Mathias has held onto his seat by razor thin margins.

He is expected to be challenged by Republican Mary Beth Carozza.

She is in the House of Delegates and has earned a reputation as a hard worker for the Eastern Shore in Annapolis.

Meanwhile, the Wicomico County Executive position will see the most action in November among three men vying for the position.

Incumbent Republican Bob Culver will face Democrat John Hamilton.

But the big challenger is expected to be Jack Heath, council president, who will be running as a nonaffiliated Independent.

Meanwhile, Democrats will be choosing a candidates to go up against incumbent Republican congressman Andy Harris.
