Republicans Take Aim at Mathias with Flyer Over Drug Bill

msa.maryland.gov

The election is on for a Lower Shore senate seat.

And it’s showing up as a flyer charging incumbent Democrat Jim Mathias as favoring mobile “drug dens” where people can “legally shoot up heroin.”

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the flyer has been paid for by the Maryland Republican Party.

Mathias told the paper that this was a distortion of his record.

The Lower Shore Democrat did support a bill that was pulled that would have provided so-called clean rooms for drug addicts which Mathias said have been successful in Europe and other U.S. states.

But he has said the measure was withdrawn after the Finance Committee found problems with the measure.

The paper adds that Mathias notes locking people up is not the only way to deal with the problem.

His likely Republican challenger Delegate Mary Beth Corozza says she had nothing to do with the flying

The paper reports that it is the second such flyer to go out after Republican leaders decided to target Mathias to flip the seat in the heavily Republican Lower Shore.

The Daily Times reports that the Maryland Republican Party did not respond to requests for comment.
