Bill to Recruit Teachers for Low Income Students in Delaware

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Delaware officials have proposed legislation aimed at recruiting teachers to work in schools with high concentrations of low-income students, English language learners and students with disabilities.

The bill proposed by Gov. John Carney, state Rep. David Bentz and Sen. Bryan Townsend would provide up to $2,000 of student loan assistance annually to teachers who qualify. Educators may qualify for up to five years of assistance.

Carney's Fiscal Year 2019 budget proposal would provide $6 million in targeted Opportunity Grant funding for schools serving significant populations of low-income students or English-language learners. It also includes a 2 percent pay raise for all educators.

The student loan relief legislation will be introduced this week in the Delaware House of Representatives.
