WILMINGTON, Del. (AP) - Delaware's top five toll violators owe almost $407,000 in unpaid tolls and fines.
The News Journal of Wilmington reports the biggest violator owes nearly $175,000 alone. The Delaware Department of Transportation's director of community relations, C.R. McLeod, says the oldest of the tolls dates back to 2005, with $225,000 still outstanding from that year.
McLeod says the revenue from tolls and fines goes straight into the state's road and infrastructure projects, and the state's 2017 toll violation revenue totaled $7,602,170.
McLeod says four of the top violators are on payment plans with the state. But the No. 1 violator is still racking up department debt.
The U.S. Department of Justice began prosecuting people with toll violations of more than $1,000 in 2007 for theft of services, a felony in Delaware.
