The Community Foundation of the Eastern has begun taking in donations for its Disaster Relief Fund to help those hit by tropical storm Harvey.

The Salisbury Daily Timesreports that the foundation will match the first $5-thousand.

The money will be given to the Greater Houston Community Foundation’s Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund for long term recovery.

Meanwhile, the Daily Times is reporting that a number of organizations are accepting contributions of non-perishable items.

The Joshua House Ministries Church and Gumboro Wesleyan Church and Community Center is accepting non-perishable items such as toiletries with drop off locations in Millsboro.

The Friends of Crisfield will accept canned food, water, hygiene products and other supplies but no clothes.

The Crisfield Wesleyan Church is also taking in donations for the storm struck region.

Archdiocese

The Archdioces of Wilmington is also taking up a collection to help out the victims of tropical storm Harvey. Delmarva Public Radio's Don Rush spoke with Bob Krebs, a spokesman for the Diocese.

In Hurlock Mayor Joyce Spratt posted on Facebook that her town will be accepting donations at the town office with a truck set to leave sometime this week.

In Millville the volunteer fire company is collecting supplies and clothing for the hurricane victims.

They range from cleaning supplies and personal hygiene time to baby food and diapers.

Finally the 70th annual National Hard Crab Derby and the Crisfield Area Chamber of Commerce is asking for items to help out in Texas.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Officials say the catastrophic flooding from Harvey has increased the need for blood donations.

Virginia Blood Services said in a news release this week that many blood drives have been canceled and donor centers have closed in the affected areas. It notes that with more sustained rain in the forecast, those cancellations and closures are likely to rise.

Virginia Blood Services Executive Director Todd Cahill says donations also dramatically decline across the country around Labor Day because of the holiday weekend.

The release says type O blood donations are the most critically needed.

Virginia Blood Services is a nonprofit that provides blood products and transfusion-related services to in Virginia, Washington, D.C., and West Virginia.

McAuliffe

Gov. Terry McAuliffe said Virginia is sending seven helicopters and 40 members of the Virginia National Guard to Texas to help with the response to Hurricane Harvey.

McAuliffe said on WTOP-FM Wednesday the personnel and equipment would be leaving Thursday morning. The governor said Virginia is willing to provide any help that is requested and noted that Virginia's Hampton Roads area is particularly vulnerable to flooding.

Members of Fairfax County's elite Urban Search And Rescue team, also known as Task Force 1, have already arrived in Texas to help.

Fairfax Rescue Team

CHANTILLY, Va. (AP) - More than a dozen members of an elite search and rescue team from Virginia have gone to work in Texas to assist with the response to Harvey.

Chuck Ryan, an assistant chief with Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, said in a video Wednesday that the 14 swift water rescue specialists have been assigned to Kingwood, Texas, a suburb of Houston, where they are responding to calls for help.

The rescuers are members of Fairfax County's elite Urban Search And Rescue team, also known as Task Force 1, which is deployed around the world to respond to natural disasters.

Ryan said Tuesday the team was initially diverted by federal authorities to San Antonio for staging until a decision could be made on where to send them.
