White Marlin Open Underway with a Rocky Start

White Marlin Open logo

Despite the stormy weather the 44th annual White Marlin Open kicked off yesterday with some 353 boats competing for nearly $5 million in prize money.

But organizers say it was a rocky start.

The docks at Harbor Island were filled with boats staying in for the day.

But the weather is expected to clear up this week giving anglers a chance to shoot for the big prize.

Aside the storm clouds the tournament is also weathering a legal battle in federal court.

Last year Philip Heasley was awarded nearly $3 million in prize money only to have it rescinded after tournament officials determined that he did not tell the truth about his start time on a lie detector test.

Heasley says he will appeal a district court judgement that sided with tournament officials.
