No School for Students Without Vaccinations

If a student in the Wicomico Public School System is not up-to-date on their vaccinations before the 20 day of the term they could be kept out of school.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that those children in kindergarten through 3rd grade, for example, must be vaccinated for chicken pox.

To help with that and other vaccinations the County Health Department is setting up clinics that can provide such vaccinations at the Fritz Health Center at 300 West Carroll Street.

Dr. James Cockey with the center told the paper that in the past the school system has been more lenient about the deadline.

The change has been mandated by Maryland state health officials who said that one reason is the influx of children coming in from other countries who may not have had such vaccinations.

Other students, meanwhile, may have fallen off the vaccination regime.

There has also been resistance by some parents who are apprehensive over any side effects of the vaccinations.

Cocky says none of these are life-threatening.
