Delaware Mulls Ban on Sale of Ivory

creative commons

DOVER, Del. (AP) - Delaware lawmakers are again seeking to ban the purchase or sale of ivory and rhinoceros horn.

A bill introduced Tuesday is similar to one that cleared the Senate last year by one vote but did not pass the House.

The bill includes exemptions for ivory or rhinoceros horn that is part of a gun, knife, musical instrument, or antique, as long as the ivory or horn is less than 20 percent by volume of the item and other conditions are met.

It also would not apply to ivory or rhinoceros horn conveyed to an heir upon a person's death.

It also would allow the purchase or sale of ivory or rhinoceros horn for educational or scientific purposes by bona fide educational or scientific institutions if not prohibited by federal law.
