PRINCESS ANNE, Md. (AP) - Authorities say a woman and her two children were critically injured in an attack at a home on the Eastern Shore.

Princess Anne Police said in a statement that the attack took place around 3 a.m. Tuesday at a townhouse.

Police Chief Tim Bozman said by telephone that the mother's boyfriend stabbed the woman and then assaulted her and the children, ages 8 and 4, with a hammer.

He did not know what led up to the attack. The woman and her children were taken to a hospital, where Bozman says they are in critical condition.

Bozman says 26-year-old Sharef Dontre Hayward of Baltimore is charged with attempted murder. The chief tells WBOC-TV that the woman had been granted a protective order against Hayward on Monday.
