The Accomack County Board of Education decided to permanently reinstate two novels that it has suspended form classrooms and libraries after receiving a complaint from a parent.
The Salisbury Daily Times reports that it did so with an opening statement at its work session last night on the suspension of the novel, ”To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee.
In addition, the famed “Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” by Mark Twain was also to be reinstated.
The parent who is white had complained about the novels’ use of racial slurs.
The board also voted to create a new committee to overhaul the existing policy on complaints about the content of such books.
Current policy had required that they be pulled from the shelves until a determination could be made.
