RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Gov. Terry McAuliffe has declared a state of emergency to ensure Virginia agencies can help the states bearing the brunt of Hurricane Matthew.
Forecasters say Virginia will be spared the worst of the storm that scraped Florida's Atlantic coast early Friday. Virginia could still see some heavy rain from the Hurricane and experience flooding in coastal areas.
McAuliffe says his emergency order will help get crews, equipment and supplies into states that are sustaining the most damage from the storm. Two Virginia emergency response teams have already been sent to the Florida to help with relief efforts.
The storm knocked out power to a half-million people in Florida. Matthew left more than 280 people dead in its wake across the Caribbean.
