BALTIMORE (AP) - A Montgomery County official is returning a $296,000 check meant to pay for riot aid to Baltimore.
The Baltimore Sun reports County Executive Isiah Leggett wrote to Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake this week, saying, "... we accepted the call for assistance with the belief that the City would do the same for us in a time of need. Consequently, we are returning the check."
Montgomery joins Baltimore County in declining reimbursement for sending officers to assist the city when rioting broke out after 25-year-old Freddie Gray's funeral. Gray died in April 2015 after sustaining a spinal cord injury in police custody.
Rawlings-Blake spokesman Anthony McCarthy says the city calculated that outside assistance during April and May 2015 costed $2.1 million.
The city has said the unrest cost $20 million.
