Sussex Planning Panel Okays Gills Neck Village Center

Don Rush

The Sussex County Planning and Zoning Commission has given its blessing to the Gills Neck Village Center near Lewes.

The 75-thousand square foot shopping center is located at the corner of Kings Highway and gills Neck Road.

The plan is a far cry from a scaled down 215-thousand proposal for a shopping center by Jack Lingo Asset Management.

Bryce Lingo told WBOC that the downsizing was a result of “listening to the people.”

But the project has drawn strong opposition from local residents with the city of Lewes raising serious environmental and traffic concerns about the project.

The citizens group Lewes Partnership for Management Growth noted that the shopping center is extremely close to the city’s water source and that it fears the increased traffic on some of the small roadways.
