Former Pocomoke Police Chief Faces Misconduct in Office Charges

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) - Maryland's state prosecutor says the former police chief of Pocomoke City and a police lieutenant have been charged with misconduct in office.

State Prosecutor Emmet Davitt announced the charges Wednesday against ex-chief Kelvin Sewell and Lt. Lynell Green.

Davitt said they interfered with the investigation of a motor vehicle accident by subordinate officers to benefit a local correctional officer.

They have been charged with conspiracy to commit misconduct in office and one count of misconduct in office.

An attorney for the men did not immediately return a call seeking comment.

Sewell was Pocomoke's first black police chief. He was fired last year, a decision that divided the Eastern Shore community. Sewell claimed he was fired for refusing to terminate two other black officers who, like Sewell, filed job discrimination complaints.
