The Stanton facility of the Delaware SPCA will be closing its doors this weekend.

But selling 21 acre property to potential developers has run into unusual problem.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that behind the newly renovated building is a pet cemetery with more than a thousand animals underneath the ground.

The paper reports there are irate pet owners who have been told that they have until the end of the month to find another resting place for their beloved pets.

One pet owner who was searching for the graves of his two dogs told the News Journal that it was “a heartbreaking nightmare.”

But the paper noted there is another unusual dimension to the story.

The ashes of a female pet owner who wanted to be buried next to her dog is also in the pet cemetery.
