Cost of Burying Power Lines in Virginia Has Some Worried

Don Rush

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - State regulators continue to express concerns about the costs associated to with the state's largest electric utility's proposal to bury power lines.

The Richmond Times-Dispatchreports that members of the State Corporation Commission were skeptical during a recent hearing of Dominion Virginia Power's plan to raise electric rates to cover burying power lines prone to outages during storms.

The SCC rejected Dominion's proposal to bury certain power lines last year, saying the company was proposing a $6 billion project that was simply too expensive. Dominion has come back this year with a scaled-back proposal that would add $6 a year to customers' bills to bury about 400 miles in the first phase of the project.
