BALTIMORE (AP) - Testimony will resume for the fifth day of trial for a Baltimore police officer facing a murder charge in the in-custody death of Freddie Gray whose neck was broken in the back of a police van.

A neurosurgeon testified yesterday that Gray would have been immediately paralyzed and unable to breathe after suffering his injuries.

Defense attorneys called Dr. Joel Winer to testify Tuesday in the trial of Officer Caesar Goodson, who faces second-degree murder, manslaughter and other charges in the death of Freddie Gray.

Winer testified that Gray suffered his injury between the fifth and final van stops, and immediately lost muscular function and his ability to breathe, rendering him unable to speak or answer questions.

Officer William Porter, whose case ended in a mistrial in December, testified Monday that Gray asked for help at stop four, and was able to answer the officers when they asked if he wanted to go to a hospital during stop five.
