DOVER, Del. (AP) - Delaware officials are using money taken off the streets during drug seizures to fund the purchase of the overdose-reversing drug naloxone for 23 police departments across the state.
State Attorney General Matt Denn announced the new allocation Thursday of about $50,000 from the state's Special Law Enforcement Assistance Fund to purchase 450 naloxone kits.
Prior to the new funds, only six departments carried naloxone, more commonly known as Narcan. The Wilmington News Journal reports that all six have used the kits to save lives.
The Division of Public Health will purchase and distribute the additional kits over the next two to three months.
State Prosecutor Kathy Jennings says she hopes departments will find alternate funds to support the program once the initial kits run out.
