Fees for Plastic Bags at Chain Stores Proposed by Delaware Lawmaker

Don Rush

There could be a five cent charge for plastic bags at grocery stores in Delaware.

The money would come from the store not the customer.

And the store would spend the funds to find out how many bags they handed out and to promote reusable bags.

The measure’s sponsor Representative Deborah Hudson, a Republican from Fairthorne, told the Wilmington News Journal…that the state has to “stop stuffing the landfills with these bags that don’t biodegrade.”

The bill would only apply to chain stores.

The News Journal reports that Julie Wenger, executive director of the Delaware Food Industry Council, say that the organization is not against the measure since it is the stores that keep the fees.
