McLEAN, Va. (AP) - A U.S. law enforcement official says Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe is a subject of a federal investigation looking at donations to his gubernatorial campaign.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly about an ongoing investigation. CNN first reported the story Monday.

Marc Elias, a lawyer for McAuliffe's campaign, said Monday that the governor, a Democrat, is unaware of any investigation but will cooperate if contacted.

Spokespeople at the FBI and Justice Department declined comment Monday.

The law enforcement official did not say what specific contributions were drawing scrutiny but said that contributions to his 2013 gubernatorial campaign were part of the investigation.

McAuliffe's predecessor in the governor's mansion, Republican Bob McDonnell, was convicted on federal corruption charges but has appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court.

Airplane Use

Records show that McAuliffe has used a state airplane to fly to Cuba and a University of Virginia basketball game in Chicago, among other destinations.

The Daily Press obtained the Department of Aviation records about flights that McAuliffe has taken since September by invoking the Freedom of Information Act.

McAuliffe took the plane all over Virginia, with short hops to Hampton Roads, the Shenandoah Valley and the District of Columbia as well as the trip to Cuba and Final Four game.

His spokesman Brian McCoy says the Democrat will reimburse the state for two trips, both out-of-state weddings.

McAuliffe's flights have been scrutinized since he used the plane last year to attend a U2 concert and former President Bill Clinton's birthday party.
