Virginia GOP Votes Against McAuliffe High Court Appointment

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Virginia House has voted down Gov. Terry McAuliffe's pick for the state Supreme Court.

The House took the formal step Wednesday of voting against Justice Jane Marum Roush, who temporarily served on the court last year and earlier this year. The move came shortly after the Senate voted to elect her.

The GOP-controlled General Assembly has the final say in electing judges. Republicans have said they won't support Roush in part because GOP leaders felt they should have been consulted before McAuliffe appointed her last summer.

But a Republican holdout senator has prevented the GOP from moving forward with their preferred pick to replace Roush, Court of Appeals Judge Rossie Alston.
