RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe has signed into law legislation that's the result of a rare compromise between Republicans and Democrats on gun policy.

The legislation signed Friday will allow more out-of-state permit holders to legally carry firearms in Virginia. It will also prohibit people subject to permanent protective orders from carrying firearms and require police presence at gun shows for voluntary background checks.

McAuliffe called it a historic agreement and the start of a "new era" in Virginia that will make residents safer. He was joined at the bill signing at the Executive Mansion by Republican leadership, supporters of domestic violence survivors and others.
