BALTIMORE (AP) - One of six Baltimore police officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray is fighting prosecutors' efforts to force him to testify against another officer whose trial begins next week.
Prosecutors had planned to use William Porter's testimony against Officer Caesar Goodson and Sgt. Alicia White. But Porter's attorneys filed a motion on Monday saying that he plans to invoke his Fifth Amendment protections against self-incrimination and decline to testify. Goodson's trial begins next Monday. Porter's first trial ended in a mistrial last month. His new trial is scheduled for June 13.
Goodson and Porter both face manslaughter, assault, misconduct in office and reckless endangerment charges. Goodson faces an additional charge of second-degree "depraved-heart" murder.
Gray died in April after suffering a critical spinal injury in police custody.
