Inmate in Allegany County Jail Dies After Found Hanging in Cell

Allegany Sheriff's Badge

CUMBERLAND, Md. (AP) - The Allegany County Sheriff's Office says an inmate found hanging in her cell has died.

The sheriff's office says deputies were called to the county detention center in Cumberland Tuesday for a report of an inmate who had apparently hung herself in her cell.

Officials said in a news release that 34-year-old Nicola Haines of Frostburg was found in her locked cell hanging from a sheet. Officials say staffers began CPR while awaiting an ambulance that took Haines to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Officials say foul play is not suspected and Haines' body will be taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore for an autopsy.

Online court records show that Haines had been jailed since Dec. 1 on burglary and theft charges.
