DELAWARE CITY, Del. (AP) - A half-mile-long, multiuse trail in Delaware City is nearing the final phases of construction.
New Castle Conservation District coordinator Kevin Donnelly tells The News Journal that thousands of tons of fill dirt were added to prevent the trail on the Branch Canal from sinking.
The walking and bike path will link the city with the north bank of the Mike Castle Trail along the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal. The $2.2 million project is part of a planned series of trails designed to raise Delaware City's profile as a nature-based tourism destination.
Town Manager Richard Cathcart says he thinks the trail is going to attract new people to the city.
Donnelly says the trail is not yet ready for visitors and won't be until April or May.
