RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia State Police say speed was a factor in a bus crash that injured about 36 people, most of them college students returning to school at the end of the holiday weekend.

Police also said in a statement Monday that they have contacted the National Transportation Safety Board about the crash.

According to police, one person was seriously injured Sunday night when the charter bus overturned on an exit ramp in North Chesterfield County just south of Richmond. About 34 other passengers and the driver were taken to hospitals to be treated for minor injuries.

Police said the driver, 58-year-old Thomas B. Chidester of Salem, has been charged with reckless driving.
