Salisbury University President Janet Dudley-Eshbach held a meeting with African American students over concerns about minority representation on campus.
The Salisbury Daily Times reports that the meeting did not last long with Matthew Jackson senior reading a statement.
The group then left with further discussion.
The statement said that the students were “not pointing fingers or casting blame” for the lack of awareness of the black experience on campus.
But, it added that the current environment “takes a huge toll on the psyche of students of color affected by the subconscious oppression.”
Richard Culver with the University’s public relations office told the paper that the President was disappointed that the meeting ended so abruptly but that she understood the students needing more time before a discussion takes place.
Meanwhile, Jackson told the paper that he wants more time to talk with students and not have a discussion based on emotion or anger.
