Dover Police Officer Has Day in Court on Assault Charges

Dover Police Dept

Corporal Thomas Webster goes to court today on second degree assault charges after a dashcam caught the Dover police officer knocking out an African American man after hitting him in the jaw during an arrest two years ago.

Last year a grand jury failed to indict him but with a new the new Attorney General Matt Denn the grand jury finally brought charges.

That was in May which was followed by the public release of dashcam footage.

The Wilmington News Journal reports that last week court documents revealed that Webster had a history of using force that resulted in a suspension.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys are expected to wrangle over the introduction of those documents into the trial.

The paper reports that while Webster’s attorney did not comment for their story he has argued that his client has been singled out because he is white and a police officer.
