Natural Gas Pipeline Challenged by VA Lawmakers and Environmentalists

newsadvance.com

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Virginia legislators and "clean energy" advocates are seeking a comprehensive review of natural gas pipelines that include two that would be laid from West Virginia and through Virginia.

They plan to outline their pitch to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission on Monday. They argue that the present review is piecemeal.

Energy companies are proposing hundreds of miles of pipeline that would carry so-called fracked natural gas from the Marcellus and Utica shale deposits in Ohio, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. They argue that natural gas is a cleaner fuel than coal and an abundant and relatively cheap source of energy.

The companies behind the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline and the Mountain Valley Pipeline each have filed with FERC. The projects involve a combined 900 miles of pipeline.
