Oldest Stallion at Assateague Euthanized

Assateague Alliance

BERLIN, Md. (AP) - Assateague Island National Seashore's wild Maryland herd has had its oldest stallion euthanized.

The Salisbury Daily Times reported Thursday that Sham, a nearly 25-year-old pony, was euthanized because of his declining condition, according to the Assateague Island Alliance nonprofit group.

The group says that it usually wouldn't put down a horse just for being thin or injured, but that the combination of old age, emaciation and infections of both sides of the pony's face made it apparent that Sham wasn't going to recover and that he was going to die soon.

The group says Sham might not have made it through October.

Sham left behind two sons and two daughters, along with possible granddaughters. Some of his progeny can be fostered online by making a donation at www.assateagueislandalliance.org.
