RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The Virginia attorney general's office says the state's largest power company should drop plans to build a third reactor at its North Anna nuclear power plant.
While Dominion Virginia Power contends it hasn't committed to building the third reactor, it is on pace to spend nearly $2 billion on the potential power source by the end of 2018.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reports that an expert witness for the attorney general's office estimated the cost of adding a third reactor in Louisa County would top $19 billion and increase customers' bills by 25 percent.
Dominion executives said they expect a federal license in 2017. They argue that to stop work on designing the reactor before that would be premature.
Nuclear power provides more than 40 percent of Dominion's customers' electricity.
