Nuke Units Shut Down at Surry Power Station

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Dominion Virginia Power says both nuclear units at its Surry Power Station are down.

Utility spokesman Richard Zuercher (ZERK'-er) said Tuesday that a week ago, a generator problem triggered sensors that caused one unit to shut down. The company is investigating and will bring the unit back up when the problem is corrected.

The second unit was shut down Monday for a scheduled refueling. Zercher said that while the unit is off line, Dominion also will replace three large pumps and three main transformers.

Zuercher said this is a good time to have both units down because the mild weather means reduced demand for electricity. He said Dominion has sufficient power available until the units are back up. He was unable to say when that will be.
