Two Maryland Towns Seek Funding for New Wastewater Treatment Plant

Don Rush

The towns of Secretary and New Market in Maryland are hoping to replace their aging wastewater treatment plant when the lagoon style facility will no longer clean up enough nitrogen and phosphorous to pass state regulations.

So far, Secretary Mayor Susan Dukes said that $9 million has been allocated in funding for the new plant but says the town needs another $5 million to move ahead with the project.

WBOC reports that the towns of Secretary and nearby New Mark are too small to simply get loans.

Despite the obstacles Mayor Dukes told the television station that she hopes to have a new wastewater treatment up and running in the next few years.
