Salisbury Mayor Jim Ireton has proposed a measure that would link rent that tenants pay to their landlords to a property’s assessed value.
The legislation would make the monthly rent for a home that is assessed at $77-thousand, $468 a month instead of the current $1-thousand.
The Mayor said if there were upgrades to the home the rent could be higher.
But WBOC reports some landlords reject the proposed rent control measure arguing that the city should not be able to dictate what a rented is charged.
The Salisbury City Council is expected to take up the measure at its October 5th meeting.
Ireton is currently running for a seat on the city council in District 4.
