Aquaculture Could Be Banned on Assateague Island

Don Rush

For those engaged in commercial fishing, aquaculture and the horseshoe crab harvest in the Assateague Island National Seashore that activity could be banned.

Park superintendent Deborah Darden told the Chincoteague Town Council last week that she has been told these are activities that should be wound down.

She said that federal regulations say that if Congress does not specifically authorize such activity then it should be banned.

Darden noted that over the last half century that has not been observed.

The Salisbury Daily Times reports that she noted there are over 12-hundred acres of aquaculture inside the park.

The town is expected to send a letter to Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe protesting the change with a lobbyist researching the regulations to find a way to preserve aquaculture and commercial fishing.
