Nearly 500 Laid Off by Newport News Shipbuilding

navsource.org

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - Newport News Shipbuilding has laid off 480 salaried workers.

Multiple media outlets report that the company announced the layoffs on Tuesday.

The Daily Press says President Matt Mulherin told employees in a letter that the job cuts were necessary to control the company's costs and manage its business during a decline in work. He said the layoffs will be the only job cuts this year.

The company told employees in July that it likely will lay off 1,500 people through 2016.

The shipyard is finishing work on three aircraft carriers.

Newport News Shipbuilding is the nation's only designer, builder and refueler of Navy aircraft carriers.
