RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Lawyers and Democratic elected officials are asking Virginia's legislative Republican leaders to reconsider plans to replace a newly seated Virginia Supreme Court justice.
But GOP leaders say they're unmoved by those pleas. They say they still plan to replace Justice Jane Marum Roush with Rossie D. Alston Jr. during a special session that starts Aug. 17.
Democratic Gov. Terry McAuliffe appointed Roush late last month, to the displeasure of GOP leaders who said they were not properly consulted about the pick.
The Fairfax County Bar Association released a resolution asking the GOP to reconsider, and an online petition called "Don't Fire Justice Roush!" has more than 1,600 signatures. Democratic lawmakers have also asked the GOP not to remove Roush.
