Arrest of Nephew in Death of Lee Harcum (Update)

Maryland State Police Mugshot

MARDELA SPRINGS, Md. (AP) - A Wicomico County man has been charged in the killing of his uncle in a farm field.

Maryland State Police say 31-year-old William B. Harcum III was charged Monday with first- and second-degree murder and first- and second-degree assault in connection with the death of 62-year-old Lee P. Harcum, who earlier that day was found dead in a Mardela Springs watermelon field with obvious head trauma.

Police say they think the nephew and his uncle were picking watermelons in the field when an argument ensued between the two. Investigators believe William Harcum III used a blunt object to strike Lee Harcum in the head.

Harcum was held without bond in the Wicomico County Detention Center on Monday night. Online jail records do not indicate if he has an attorney.
